CO2 as brine
When CO2 is used as brine, it is pumped over the circuit towards the various users. This solution has numerous advantages:
- Guaranteed hygiene and safety conditions: CO2 is a non toxic, non flammable refrigerant. Moreover it is of food quality grade: in case it gets in contact with food, the products are not damaged and remain suitable for consumption.
- Cost reduction of the piping network compared to a traditional brine system thanks to CO2 thermo-physical properties and lower required flow rate (according pipes, diameters are reduced from 50 to 300%).
- Running cost reduction: For CO2 viscosity is much lower than other brines, such as glycol water, the pump and related electrical consumption are lower.
- Nice steadiness of product or air temperature and lower electrical consumption: As CO2 evaporates at steady temperature, it allows to get a uniform temperature all over the users. The refrigeration unit which is used to condense CO2 is operated with a lower compression rate, thus installed electrical power and electrical consumption are lowered.
- Safety and environment preservation: Whatever the refrigerant is, to condense CO2, either HFC or NH3, its quantity is drastically reduced compared to a standard solution using directly the refrigerant up to the users. Other advantage: there are less potentially leaking points and the refrigerant load is confined in one single location.
