    CO2, secondary refrigerant

CO2 used as a secondary refrigerant is the ideal alternative to glycol water.
With its unique properties, pumped CO2 has many advantages over glycol water.

    Energy performance :
    - The volumetric efficiency of CO2 considerably reduces the energy required to pump the fluid.
    - As CO2 evaporates at a constant temperature, the temperature at the various points of use in the system will be more stable.
    - The refrigeration unit which liquefies the CO2 operates at a lower compression ratio, thereby significantly reducing the installed capacity and power consumption.
    - The use of high-efficiency heat exchangers on the refrigerated cabinets, evaporators, etc. allows the compression ratio of the liquefaction to be reduced.

    Smaller installations :
At equal power, CO2 pipes have a diameter up to 3 times smaller than glycol water pipes.

    Easier operation :
Interventions on CO2 circuits are quicker and simpler than on glycol water circuits as emptying and filling operations are shorter.

    Health and safety guaranteed :
CO2 is non-toxic, non-inflammable and suitable for use with food: contact with CO2 does not render foodstuffs unfit for consumption.
Systems that use CO2 as a secondary refrigerant can also replace direct expansion installations. A slightly higher power consumption is compensated for by a number of other advantages:
    - The confinement of the refrigerant used for liquefaction : significant reduction in the charge and better control of any leaks.
    - The use of high-efficiency and/or ecological refrigerants : some refrigerants cannot be used in direct expansion systems for technical or regulatory reasons. The fact that the refrigerant is confined to the machine room means that they can now be used.

CO2 can be used as a secondary refrigerant for a multitude of applications (food, supermarkets, logistics, industry,…) over a very wide range of temperatures (-30°C to +10°C). Today, with 5 year's experience and over 40 installations operating with this technology in Europe, AXIMA REFRIGERATION France is the ideal partner to provide you with a solution perfectly adapted to your industrial or environmental process. Contact our Service and Industrial Applications department for a more detailed presentation of the design of an installation using this technology, to organise a visit to a site where it is in operation or to obtain our list of references.
